Opacity
How much light do you need? Bedrooms often need blackout, living rooms opt for more sunlight and end up needing room-darkening and light filtering types of fabrics.
Wood or Faux Wood
Faux wood is most common for shutters for the price, but wood also has its benefits for durability.
Chain pull
Easy, fast, cheap. Common for doorways where a quick up-and-down is important.
Cordless
Spring-controlled and stays where you leave it. A common option.
Motor
There are many options for motors and they vary in price based on shade size, but are generally a ~$320 decision. You’ll use the shades more and can set them to timers to follow the sun.
We only use gold standard Somfy motors for most applications. They’re quiet, reliable, and work with more smart home tech.
Open roll
You’ll see the fabric roll mounted up top. Most common for clean, modern aesthetics. Most affordable.
Fascia
A decorative cover for the front of the roll. Commonly fabric wrapped. Most common for a traditional look.
Full housing
Best to block out almost all light on the sides of the roll. Most expensive.
Connects all your shades to the internet. Integrates with Alexa and Google Home. Use your phone as a remote, set timers to follow the sun, set zones, and more. Costs $250.
Dual shades
This incorporates two shades in one. Blackout when you want it, sheer when you don’t. this option incorporates two fabrics in one.
Blackout tracks
Sun peeks through the edges of most shades. Blackout tracks are small metal tracks that seal the edges and stop the light.

What blinds and shades are in style?
Roller shades and wood plantation shutters are by far the top sellers. Roller shades are clean, modern, and relatively inexpensive. Wood shutters are beautiful, timeless, and improve your home’s value.
How do you choose a shade color?
Either blend in or stand out – not in between. Most people choose neutrals that are similar to their wall color. We sell a lot of white, beige, and light grey. Or go for contrast, usually a dark vs light or sometimes a bold color.
Whats the difference between blinds, shades, and shutters?
Shades are rolls of fabric that drop down. Blinds have wood slats connected by string. Shutters have louvered wood slats.
Shades are the most common window covering, followed closely by blinds. Shutters are mostly found in higher-end homes.
Do shades keep heat out?
Cellular shades are the most energy efficient window coverings. Their honeycomb design traps air pockets to insulate your windows, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Are wood shutters worth it?
Wooden plantation shutters are expensive, but they’re famously beautiful, timeless, energy efficient, and improve your home’s value. If you have the money, plantation shutters are a good investment.
